Introduction and Objectives

New Brighton Cricket Club was established in 1856 and has enjoyed a fine sporting tradition ever since. In recent times the club has recognised the need to change and evolve into a community based club to meet the challenges of the twenty first century.

The Club quickly realised that urgent but structured action was required to ensure core activities could continue not just for the present but also for many years to come. The club has changed its constitution to a community based club as recognised by the Inland Revenue.

We have adopted all procedures and policies directed toward us by the ECB and have found that the implementation of these policies, although challenging, have proved utterly rewarding. In 2003 we were proud to receive the Sport England Clubmark award in recognition of our commitment to providing a safe and child friendly environment for cricket.

We believe we are well set to continue this progress with improved management structures and attitudes to ensure there is no complacency within the organisation.

Areas of particular need and how we are addressing or planning to address these needs are covered in the pages of this report and highlighted in the executive summary.

As a club we remain committed to achieving ECB and Sport England objectives and continuing to build on an already excellent base. With the continued support of the excellent Cheshire Cricket Development Officers we are confident of achieving this.

Objectives covered in this Plan are as follows

· Club Management
· Junior Development
· Coaching and Training
· Membership and Marketing
· Facilities
· Community Links
· Women and Girls Cricket

George Roberts
New Brighton Cricket Club
Cricket Chairman 2002 –
Club Management

1 Review constitution

The NBCC constitution is reviewed on a continual basis to ensure it meets the needs of the membership, the community and sports governing bodies. Recent examples of this include the amendment to change to a community sports amateur club, and the formal adoption in the constitution of the ECB safe hands policy (already implemented) to be confirmed at the clubs AGM in January 2005.

2 ECB Child Protection Policies

As previously discussed in previous drafts of the ECB child welfare policies have been adopted and provision is made annually to formally adopt new legislation and directives.

3. Maintain Clubmark Status

Critical to our development plans the club has instigated audits and surveillance of cricket operations to ensure compliance is met. 2004 has seen us recognise the scope of ensuring compliance and we have acted to ensure achievement by seeking to appoint a designated Clubmark officer. Chairman has fulfilled this role during 2004 and a place has been allocated on the management committee for designated officer.

4. Attend local development groups

The club recognises the importance of local forums and fully attends and participates in these groups. Chairman, Secretary or Junior organiser attends and a full report is given to management committee.

5. Monitor and evaluate Development Plan

Another key point the development plan and action plans are constantly reviewed and updated according to progress. Those areas, which may have failed to achieve in the agreed timescale, are evaluated and redrafted to ensure progress can be made. Ultimate responsibility for this is Chairman’s with support from Cricket Committee and secretary.

Junior Development

1. Increase Juniors 20% year on year

2004 saw an increase of 20 % in Junior Membership from 90 to 108 participants. Some of this growth was achieved by organic means, children of current senior players becoming old enough to play. We did however actively recruit junior players from Mosslands School and this proved successful.

To achieve 20% growth in 2005 we are actively approaching Oldershaw School and Riverside Primary to offer places to juniors. We are also seeking sponsorship to provide assisted places in 2005 for less privileged junior cricketers. Pilot scheme with free membership proved successful in 2004 and will be continued in 2005.

2. Formal Links with Schools

Links with Mosslands School in Wallasey were founded in 2003. 2004 saw links created with Oldershaw School giving their year 9 pupils their first experience of grass wicket cricket. These links will be further developed in 2005 along with a rollout to primary schools for under 9 cricket via Wirral Council Sports Development Department.

3. Coaching Sessions

Commencing 2003, structured professional coaching has been available to all junior and senior cricketers with level 3 coaches available. 2004 has seen this program targeted at one to one sessions with senior level 3 coaches and level 1 and 2 coaches taking the group sessions. We require sponsorship and/or small grant assistance to continue this in 2005. We have secured £2000 for 2005 already from local businesses and will meet this target as the Club Treasurer also sees the importance of this program and has agreed to underwrite any shortfall.

4. Build core-playing strength

We have identified shortfalls in numbers at under 17 level and under 13 level. To address this we are actively committed to retaining under 17’s by involving them in the clubs volunteer network and ensuring they play senior cricket on Saturdays and Sundays. Positive selection is proving successful in ensuring junior retention and Captains are financially supported by the club to ensure that financial difficulties, such as match subs are not a barrier to juniors playing cricket.

Under 13 shortages are a cycle which will be rectified when the under 11’s come through next year. To ensure constant flow through the age groups we are advertising locally and approaching schools directly to stimulate interest.

5. Talent Identification

We operate a coaching structure, which recognises the importance of developing excellence whilst encouraging participation and developing lesser talent also. One to one coaching sessions have developed talent and team managers and coaches meet weekly with senior coaches to assess and discuss development paths for the juniors. This will continue to be developed in 2005 with head coach appointment.

6. Support Team

NBCC actively encourages parental support; ensuring parental codes of conduct are adhered to. These are presented and explained at induction and enrolment evenings. We hold regular parents evenings with club officers presenting up to date information and progress to the parents. We have found this encourages parental involvement and will continue to hold these evenings in 2005.

Coaching and Training

1 More coaches

The club actively supports the training and development of its coaching structure. The club has paid for 6 level 1 coaches to be certified in the last 2 years and will continue to do so next year.

2. Develop Existing Coaches.

Coaches with talent are assessed by our level 3 coaches and advise on career progression. We intend to financially support level 2 advancement for 2 coaches in 2005.

3. Continue Structured Training

Absolute commitment from the club to ensure we have a professional qualified coach available each year. Crucial to our development we actively recruit a coach each year, the last 2 years head coach has been Sri Lankan Test Cricketer Chandika Hathurusinghe who has served us well.

4. Level 3 Coaching for talented cricketers

As previously discussed we employ a level 3 coach to do this job and will continue to do so going forward. Committed finance for 2005 already in place.

5. 1: 12 coach player ratio

This was achieved in 2004 due to the extra coaches the club paid for. We actively encourage younger players to earn their coaching certificates and by way of payback request they support junior coaching at set times. This will continue with Junior Organiser to manage.

Membership and Marketing

1 Communication

Monthly Newsletters to be produced and distributed via email and post commencing Autumn 2004. There will also be an opportunity for members to complete a survey on line or by post/ suggestion box. Suggestions and survey responses will be an item on each cricket management and club council meetings – Secretary to manage

2 Volunteer Recruitment & Retention

Parental volunteers have increased by 20% during the last 2 years as parents have gained more understanding of the clubs’ development plans. We aim to increase this figure further by a minimum of an extra 2 volunteers per junior team during 2005. We will do this by holding more parent/junior player meetings including presentation evening, preseason buffet and registration evening.

3 Develop website

In addition to www.newbrightoncricketclub.co.uk during winter of 2004 and 2005 onward we will devote more resources to http://www.newbrighton.play-cricket.com/

4 Marketing Plan

Our marketing plan requires upgrading as we are under budget for sponsorship this year. Highly successful in recent years sponsorship has enabled us to deliver real value in professional coaching and are crucial to future development.

Marketing manager top be appointed for 2005 to co-ordinate plan.

5 Increase Membership

Need to increase playing and non-playing membership by advertising, internally and externally. We need to also reduce churn in membership by meeting needs of membership. Membership survey will identify areas we can improve on. We need to ensure cricket is available to all who want to play at whatever standard. Links to schools and other community organisations will help. 40% of junior parents are not members of the club at all. Conversion of 50% of these parents who entail an increase in membership of 25 adult members.

Facilities

1 & 2 Pitch Improvements and non turf practice pitches

Fundamental to development plans we identified the absolute requirement for improvement in pitch quality and practice facilities.

Standard of pitches have generally improved during the last few years and the square received an excellent report from the ECB’s inspector of pitches. However as a relatively small square where and tear does impact on pitch standards later in the year. Also the square has borne the brunt of practice requirements due to lack of non turf practice facilities.

Following the award of ECB funding for a four-lane practice facility we are now able to achieve a fundamental element in our development plan. Work commences September 2004 on this practice facility, which will be available for start of season 2005. A separate annex including usage schedule and funding plan is attached in appendices.

As well as forming the basis for our coaching and school outreach work the non turf nets will reduce the requirement to practice on the square. We can also lift the obsolete on square non turf strip and replace with two grass wickets. On of which could be used for First Eleven matches, both for second/third team. This will minimise wear and tear on existing strips and have a huge impact on the quality of our pitch preparation. Lift and rebuild grass wickets on square non turf pitch commencement 2006 in use 2008.

3 Replace Covers

Covers are non satisfactory as they are too heavy for ease transportation and leak. Professionally made covers at a cost in the region of £6000 are required. This funding is not in place at present and needs to be discussed in winter with a funding plan in place for season 2005/6. Continue to use present covers in the mean time.

4 Replace Sightscreens

Premier league requirements state a sightscreen should not need to move for a change of bowler or action. This means 2 screens per end or very wide screens. We had committed to achieve wider screens this year but work unfortunately was suspended on safety grounds as a widened screen may prove too heavy and be a wind hazard. (Re Liverpool CC 2003 screens blew down on children in high winds). Working party to work out plan and achieve screens in time for commencement of season 2005.

Community Links

1 Regular contact with CDO’s & SDO’s

Attending development forums and maintaining regular meetings with CDO’s has proved successful and will continue.

2 Links with Local schools

Links to Mosslands School exist from 2002 and links to Oldershaw School were formally made in 2004 with Oldershaw playing on grass crickets for the first time. During 2005 we will build on this link also offering g facilities to the schools to hold inter house matches as well as school matches. We envisage enhanced membership from this development.

2005 will see a rollout of links to primary schools also. .

3 Disabilities cricket

We intend to offer any assistance to local disabilities cricket officer we can by way of facilities and support.

4 Ethnic monitoring

Wallasey area is a very low area of ethnicity. However New Brighton Cricket Club are well represented and will continue to monitor and actively support increased ethnic representation

Women’s Cricket

1. Recruitment and development

Reestablishment of ladies cricket has been an objective for a number of years. It has proved difficult to establish a team with previous efforts centring on adult women cricketers. We have now moved to a model of supporting junior girls cricket through our existing age group teams and also providing specialist coaching for girls/women.

We will advertise in the local press again in season 2005 and look to have a team available for matches in season 2005. Help from CDO’s will be essential in this area.

2. Role models

Identifying a role model and leader is crucial to the sustainable success of this project.

Women’s Cricket is as an achievable and essential part of our development plan and much work has been done and will continue to be done to achieve our objectives.

The aim is to have a team capable of competing in selected matches from 2005 with a team and pool of players capable of competing in a league by season 2008. This allows for girls in the existing system, complemented by recruitment to form the basis of a future team.
